The government decided on October 4 to let V S Chauhan continue as the acting UGC chairman until a permanent head is appointed. It may be recalled that the HRD Ministry had recently sought an informal legal opinion on who should act as the Commission head in view of a six-month delay in appointing a full-time chairman. As the legal opinion favored letting Chauhan continue, the ministry issued the order for extending his term until a permanent chairman is appointed.
