New Delhi (11.04.2022): Ahead of retirement this month-end the incumbent Chairman of CBDT JB Mohapatra (IRS IT:1985) would get an extension in service or not has been doing rounds in power corridors. Since there has been precedence, rather a norm now, of retaining (post-retirement) the chairmen and members post-retirement nothing stops Mohapatra to remain on the turf post superannuation age which he is completing this month-end. For example; the govt had retained Sushil Chandra and PC Mody as chairman and member SK Gupta on a contract basis. Yet nothing makes Mohapatra sure until the orders of re-engagement are issued. Interestingly, certain developments have recently taken place which may have finished the prospects of two senior high-profile members from becoming the claimants for the chairman post. Here lies the clue for what scenario would emerge on extension, non-extension, retainment or the appointment of a new chairman. (Continues......)
