Power corridors are abuzz with rumors of a major Cabinet reshuffle following the departure of Manohar Parrikar from the Central Cabinet. Further, if Home Minister Rajnath Singh is also sent to Lucknow as is in the air, the entire security establishment would become headless. It's generally believed that Arun Jaitley who has been appointed as a stop-gap defense minister has neither the capability nor the popularity to run this crucial ministry. Already the principle of continuity in the defense ministry stands compromised; and if it happens in the home ministry, too, the NaMo administration, despite its massive mandate in the UP elections, runs the avoidable risk of tripping.
Even as Parrikar took over as the CM of Goa and will face the floor test on Thursday, speculations were rife on Tuesday that the new Defence Ministry may see the shortest tenure. In the corridors of power, the name of Maharashtra CM Devendra Phadnavis is doing the rounds as new Raksha Mantri. If Phadnavis moves to Delhi, state revenue minister Chandrakant Patil may step into his shoes as Maharashtra CM. Phadnavis is said to have been picked up for the crucial defense ministry on the ground of his immense capability to sort out complicated problems and carry his team along.
