In order to fill the long-pending judicial vacancies in various High Courts, Centre has cleared seventy names and put the ball in the court of Supreme Court Collegium. Now the SC Collegium has to finalise the names and come up with final recommendations. Indianmandarins has reliably learnt that Law Ministry has sent around seventy names to the Supreme Court Collegium for a conclusive discussion and subsequent appointment of judges in thirteen High Court. According to established procedure, the HC Collegium send shortlisted names of candidates to the Law Ministry which further attaches IB reports about the candidates and sends the files to the SC collegium for a final call. If some top sources at the Delhi High Court are to be believed, at least fifteen names have come from for judgeship from Allahabad alone. Another fourteen names are from Punjab & Haryana and while nine names figure from Delhi High Court. This development defies the perception that Modi Government sits on files as it resists fresh appointments of judges in high courts. This time Centre has played a proactive role by sending seventy names in a single decision. Top sources in the High Court say that many of the recommendations received by the Centre are not up to the mark. Further, the HCs recommendations have put a challenge before the SC Collegium to select meritorious candidates and reflect upon its commitment to take the judicial reforms at a high level.
