Ms. Sarangi (IAS) freed to take a plunge in politics

As Indianmandarins had reported earlier (October 31, 2018), senior IAS officer, Ms. AparajitaSarangi (IAS:1994:OR), has been freed as the Prime Minister consented to her VRS application last Friday. Therefore, she will be free to take a plunge in politics.

Immediately after the Centre’s consent, she announced on her official Twitter handle: “I am grateful to our Hon'ble Prime Minister for his kind acceptance and approval of VRS application……I seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath and good wishes of all……I look forward to the next journey with enthusiasm, positivity, and optimism.”.

On Wednesday, the Odisha Govt had given the go-ahead to her VRS application. She had applied for it on September 15.

Earlier, Sarangi was serving as a joint secretary (MGNREGA), Ministry of Rural Development, and her five-year tenure on central deputation had ended in August. Though a native of Bihar, 49-year-old Sarangi is married to her batchmate Santosh Sarangi from Orissa.

Reportedly, she will soon join the BJP ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections and may contest the election from Bhubaneshwar where the common people were greatly impressed by her work.

Aparajita (IAS) joining BJP or BJD?

The question everyone asking in the civil services is whether Aparajita Sarangi (IAS:1994:OR) will join BJP or BJD. Aparajita’s possible entry into the electoral fray would add to the growing number of former and serving bureaucrats joining politics in Odisha and other states during the last couple of decades.

The no-nonsense dynamic lady of Bihari parents is said to have shot off her VRS letter on September 15 following the completion of her five-year central deputation. Married to her batchmate Santosh Sarangi who also belongs to the Orissa cadre, she served in the central government as a joint secretary (MGNREGA), Ministry of Rural Development. Her five-year tenure on central deputation ended in August.

Sources believe that V Karthikeyan Pandian (IAS:2000: OR), PS to Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik, and who is also known as ‘super CM’ has been playing an important role in wooing Aprajita to become a BJD candidate for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

As the former commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) between 2006-09, she earned a great reputation and her departure from that position brought tears to the eyes of the vendors and citizens of the Utkal's capital city.

BJD’s Prasanna Patasani has been representing the Bhubaneswar parliamentary seat continuously since 1998, tasting triumph at the hustings consecutively on five occasions (1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014).

During her outstanding career reaching a quarter of century though not yet there, she had worked as a director, Panchayati Raj; secretary, school and mass education; secretary, higher education; commissioner, consolidation; and secretary, textiles and handloom. The frequency of her transfers had raised several eyebrows, indicating that she was not in the good books of the ruling BJD. This, sources believe, could have prompted the 49-year-old Aparajita to consider taking the political plunge.
