Power corridors are abuzz that the incumbent MoRTH Secretary Vijay Chibber (IAS:1978:MT) may be given further extension as Chairman NHAI beyond August 05, 2015. Chibber was given the additional charge of Chairman NHAI on June 05 as R P Singh's term was to conclude on June 11.
It is also learnt that Cabinet Secretary had sought the file last week that pertained to the short-listed candidates for the post. The fresh buzz has started doing rounds that one can not deny the possibility that Chibber may be appointed as fullfleged Chairman of NHAI after his superannuation in December this year. Reportedly, the proposal of degrading the post of NHAI Chairman to the rank of additional secretary has been withdrawn.
The race for NHAI chief's post had over 40 applicants which included over a dozen secretaries, former top bureaucrats, top enginers, PSU chiefs and MDs of major banks. The names also included Rohit Modi, the incumbent CEO of Suzlon Group.
Chairman, NHAI is the Chief Executive of one of world's largest and most successful road development programme being carried out in India. The Modi government has sharpened its focus on augmenting infrastructure, especially building 30 km of roads a day.
