The Meghalaya government will set up a Directorate of Food Processing under the Department of Agriculture. "The Cabinet had a detailed discussion on the proposal brought by the Agriculture Department on the creation of this new directorate. We decided to approve the creation of the new directorate since the proposal brought to the Cabinet was valid and genuine," Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong told newsmen after the Cabinet meeting in Shillong. He said the new directorate will help in creating the ecosystem for the production and processing of fruits like oranges, potatoes, pineapples and agricultural produce like black pepper, tomato among many others. According to Tynsong, the Directorate will be responsible for tracking processing units in the State. He said that the State Government is also looking to encourage entrepreneurs and youths to set up various processing units in different sectors throughout the State.
