Kerala IPS officer in trouble over birthday sweets, probe ordered

Kerala Transport Commissioner Tomin J Thachankary on Wednesday celebrated his birthday by cutting a cake and distributing sweets in various offices of his department. But in the politically inflammable state, because of his proximity to the CM, he has landed himself into controversies. On Thursday, Transport Minister A K Saseendran ordered a probe into the unusual celebration. "It is a matter of propriety, how a government official should celebrate his birthday. I have asked the Chief Secretary to look into the incident. Action, if necessary, would be taken against the commissioner based on the Chief Secretary's report,'' Saseendran said.
Thachankary had cut a birthday cake at his office on Tuesday and held another cake cutting ceremony on Wednesday in Kochi, where he had inaugurated an event to promote the use of helmets. He then distributed sweets and cake to all two-wheeler riders, who turned up at the filling station. Earlier, he had sent a message to all offices under Motor Vehicle Department to distribute sweets to mark his birthday.
Thachankary said he distributed sweets in offices to share his happiness with his colleagues. "I would bear the cost of sweets. What is wrong in a department chief giving sweets to his colleagues. I haven't made it a celebration and there is nothing wrong in it. There was no circular to celebrate my birthday," he said.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala Thursday flayed the conduct of the transport commissioner, and said: "Transport Minister A K Saseendran is losing the battle against Thachankary.''
Thachankary, once a known confidant of CM Pinarayi Vijayan, was made the transport commissioner by the previous UDF government. Also an ace music composer, Thachankary has earlier landed in many controversies. He had faced suspension over a secret tour to the Gulf in 2010 during the last LDF regime. He had flown to Gulf without the mandatory clearance from the government. When CPM in Kerala started its own TV channel, the IPS officer had taken up the task of furnishing the channel studio.
