The Assam Public Services Commission (APSC) scam, committed during the 15-year rule of the Congress Party, is casting a long shadow on the state's civil and police services. A civil service officer, Ramanuj Hazarika, who was serving in north-eastern Assam's Dhemaji as an election officer and executive magistrate, posted his resignation letter on Facebook early last Friday. Further, a Court of Special Judge, Assam, rejected bail petitions of 16 ACS, APS and allied service officials who were arrested in connection with the cash-for-job scam on charges of securing jobs through payment of money. Following a strong opposition by special public prosecutor BK Mahajan and perusal of the case diary submitted by Dibrugarh Police, the court also dismissed the anticipatory bail petition of another accused ACS officer Nishamoni Deka, who is still on the run. Another arrested APS officer Hemanta Hillol Saikia who too had earlier moved a bail petition withdrew it at the last moment.
