The post fell vacant on 24 September 2015 but currently, S K Sharma continues as its Chairman on an extension. Reportedly, Naveen Kumar (ED, PFC) has also been in the consideration zone as he is listed number two on the panel of two. Indianmandarins learned that though the Search-cum-selection-committee has made up its mind, but is holding back from recommending the names due to the Assembly elections in Punjab. It's learned that the Power Ministry has been requested to go slow by other stakeholder states like Punjab, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh. Sources said D K Sharma has grabbed the attention of selection committee for his proven professional track record. Recently (29 December 2016) he was honored with the prestigious 'CBIP Award' for Best Performing Utility in Hydro Power Sector. The CBIP, (Central Board of Irrigation and Power) had selected him for the award for his over 30 years of association with the power sector. He earned a name for himself for implementing and commissioning Tala Hydro Power Station in Bhutan which opened the Indo- Bhutan association in the hydropower sector.
