Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship secretary K P Krishnan (IAS:1983:KN) has said the issue of restructuring sector skill councils may be discussed in June.
Addressing a Management and Entrepreneurship Skills Summit in New Delhi, Krishnan said it was excessive to have more than 40 skill councils and the Ministry was considering reducing the number of sector skill councils, as recommended by the Sharda Prasad Committee Report. Krishnan conceded there were flaws in the existing skilling ecosystem and pointed to the fact that there was no or little wage premium available to the formally skilled workers and the skill certification system lacked credibility in the absence of a regulator.
