On Monday, Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister for Labour & Steel, stated that "BJP never promised Achchey Din....it was a construct designed by social media". Clearly, Tomar is differentiating between the party and its leader in the Lok Sabha. With disillusionment mounting, party president Amit Shah had some time ago sought to wriggle out of the commitment from 'acche din' by stating that it was a 'chunavi-jumla'. Whether it was a jumla or commitment, it will be put to test in the critical Bihar assembly elections barely two months away. Now BJP MP from Bihar and former Union Home Secretary Rajkumar Singh has pinpointed the absolute uselessness of continuing with the old policy of unproductive dialogue with Pakistan. He has stressed upon the need for following the Israeli model of counter-terrorism.
Modi's craving to hog the limelight is setting off its own problems. Sensing that the PM may be losing some of his electoral appeal, Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP and Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP have served an ultimatum to the BJP to decide the issue of seat-sharing.
Modi's penchant for taking personal credit for the government's achievements has its critics. He projected the agreement signed with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Issak-Muivah) as his personal achievement, instead of taking on board all the Northeastern states and the military establishment. Shortly, everyone was up in arms questioning the usefulness of the accord.
As Modi's self-obsession mounts, he dithers and relies more on chosen bureaucrats and politicians like Arun Jaitley. In the process he may find his dreams of ushering India into a new age simply vanish.
