New Delhi (13.01.2023): Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Kamla Devi, the fifth in the series of five fast patrol vessels, was commissioned at Kolkata on January 12, 2023 by Director General V S Pathania.
The Ship Kamla Devi has been named in the honor of Kamladevi Chattopadhyay, a social reformer and freedom fighter, who is remembered for her contribution to the Indian Independence movement. She was the driving force behind the renaissance of Indian Handicrafts & handlooms. She is the first woman in India to contest elections from Madras Constituency which pioneered the path for women in India. Kamala Devi was conferred with Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India in 1955 and 1987, respectively. She is known as Hatkargha Maa for her work in the handloom sector.
The ship is capable of undertaking multi-faceted tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, Search & Rescue, and Medical Evacuation. The ship is fitted with state-of-the-art technology, navigation and communication equipment, sensors and machinery. The ship is also equipped with 30 mm 2A42 Medak gun and 12.7 mm Stabilized Remote Controlled Gun (SRCG) for enhancing the fighting efficiency of the ship. The ship has one Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) and one Gemini Boat each for swift boarding and Search & Rescue operations.
