N L Beno Zephine, probably the first 100 per cent visually impaired officer to join IFS (Indian Foreign Service), was felicitated yesterday (June 18) by the Union MoS Jitendra Singh and senior DOPT officials for her fortitude and fervour. Ms Zephine, a 25-year-old native of Tamil Nadu, is a probationary officer with SBI, She had received an order from GoI last week to report within 60 days. While facilitating the MoS recalled it as the first unique and peculiar case he encountered immediately after taking over the charge of Ministry last year. It was Zephine's unrelenting determination which had inspired the DOPT to follow up her case with utmost earnestness and find ways to accommodate her in an appropriate slot. She had secured 343 rank and shown keen interest in taking up Indian Foreign Service (IFS). She got few books Brailled, but much of her preparation was done with the help of her father & friends.
