A section of the administration wants Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accommodate a director or joint secretary level officer to coordinate the northeastern affairs which also interest the PM very much as he sees the area as the pivot for the country’s active engagement with southeast Asia.
In all the previous govts, there used to be a senior Joint Secretary level officer (or for sometime senior Director rank officer) belonging to North East state or from NE cadre to advise the PM on NE Region. During the Vajpayee era, Ashok Saikia (IAS:1971:AM) prominently looked after NE issues for over ten years. Former bureaucrat Karnail Singh (IAS:1964) too did the same assignment for long years. In addition, Kumar Sanjay Krishna (IAS:1985:AM) had a stint in PMO as Director looking after NE issues.
Indianmandarins has reliably learnt through Members of Parliament and few former bureaucrats representing Northeastern Region that despite the PM’s focus on the development of NE Region, little efforts have been made for lack of an adviser especially dedicated to studying, analyze and coordinate NE issues.
