Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under Shipping Ministry, is faced with an acute shortage of critical human resources, specially at senior levels. This is despite the fact that IWAI has to oversee the execution and monitoring of as many as 111 inland waterways that have been designated as national in importance.
There has been no replacement for Vice-chairperson, Ms Jayashree Mukharjee (IAS:1986:MH), after she repatriated to her state cadre on October 7, 2014. Member (Traffic) S S Mishra (an IRTS officer) had moved 30 months back as Chairman of Paradip Port Trust. And Member (Tech) R P Khare superannuated on January 31, 2016.
Two critical decision-making posts in senior management have been laying vacant for more than two years and the third one (Member, Tech) fell vacant on January 31 this year with the retirement of R P Khare. At the senior management level, the Authority is run by Chairman, Secretary and Member (Finance) only.
