Mohammad Jamshed of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) is the new General Manager (GM) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (the news was first broken by this website on October 16). It’s after two and half years that an IRTS officer is appointed as GM. The promotion of Jamshed, who has been an additional member of the Railway Board, was necessitated by the fact that the post of Member Traffic in the Board will fall vacant in January 2016. To fill the post of Member Traffic, the railway would need an officer of the GM rank from the IRTS. Since there is no GM rank officer from the IRTS in the railways at present, Jamshed was appointed GM so that he could qualify for the job of Member Traffic.
May it be noted that IRTS officers have fallen behind their peers from other services in the railways in promotion to higher ranks owing to inter-services seniority. The last time an IRTS officer, Devi Prasad Pande, became GM was in 2013. He held the post for barely three months.
