The Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) began its deliberations this morning focusing on accelerating economic growth and employment. Arvind Subramanian, Chief Economic Advisor to Ministry of Finance, is said to have presented a report on the state of the economy and listed out the interventions that are required to be made to speed up GDP growth rate and generate more jobs.
Since this is the first meeting, the EAC-PM may limit itself to laying down the roadmap that could be discussed among the central and state government ministries before initiating the measures to accelerate growth. May it be noted that without the support of state governments, there is not much that the central government can do to speed up growth and generate jobs.
Chaired by NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy, the meeting is attended by its other members like Surjit Bhalla, Rathin Roy, Ashima Goyal (part-time members) and Ratan Watal, Principal Advisor, NITI Aayog (member-secretary).
A press release issued by the government on October 10 said the EAC-PM held a “brainstorming session with stakeholders” on Monday in the run-up to the Wednesday meeting.
