Delhi finally gets its Lokayukta

Reva Ketrapal

Justice Reva Khetrapal, who retired from the Delhi High Court in September 2014, is the new anti-graft ombudsman of the NCT of Delhi. She was named the Delhi Lokayukta in an unanimous decision taken by an unlikely panel made up of Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta and the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court G. Rohini.
A notification announcing Ms. Khetrapal’s appointment to the office of the Lokayukta – a post which has remained empty for two years after Justice Manmohan Sarin relinquished office in November 2013 – is expected to be issued by Dr. Jung as early as Wednesday after a go-ahead from the office of President Pranab Mukherjee.
Justice Khetrpal, who is billed as the first lady Lokayukta in the country, has given judgments as a Delhi High Court judge in a number of high-profile cases including the December 16,2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case, where she upheld the death penalty of the convicts.
