Even after the dusts of political crises have settled down in Tamil Nadu, the TN cadre officers posted in Delhi do not miss a chance to have words of praise for Sheela Balakrishnan (IAS: 1976: TN), the former Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu.
After J Jayalalithaa had to quit as CM after conviction and imprisonment the TN bureaucracy witnessed a smooth transition in administration. Tamil Nadu cadre officers in Delhi recall that Ms Balakrishnan had virtually had a firm command on behalf of Jayalalithaa and ensured a smooth succession by Pannerselvam and transition in administration. Officers still recall that they hardly felt any vacuum and emptiness in the absence of Jayalalithaa. They had clarity of whom and where to take the command from. Probably for the reason officers often term Ms Balakrishnan, ‘the queen of crises period’. Jayalalithaa must be feeling proud of her?
