Two retired civil servants may take on two prominent and high-profile leaders of the TDP in the forthcoming AP assembly election. These two are part of a large number of civil servants from IRS and other services who have opted to test their luck in AP election. Though the participation of civil servants in an election is not a new thing in the state, the large number this time may look like a new trend.

K. Chandramouli, a former IAS officer of the 1990 batch, is contesting against TDP national president and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in the Kuppam Assembly constituency.

K. Iqbal Ahmed Khan, a retired IPS officer, will be crossing swords with Hindupur sitting MLA and Naidu’s brother-in-law Nandamuri Balakrishna.

Both Chandramouli and Khan are in the race on the YSRCP ticket.

While Khan had served as Rayalaseema IG, Chandramouli had resigned from the post of Director General at the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), which is a part of the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Rural Development, in 2014 to contest against Naidu.

Former CBI Joint Director V.V. Lakshminarayana is also testing his fortunes in the political arena. The former IPS officer is the JSP candidate for the Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha constituency, and he will be crossing swords with Balakrishna’s son-in-law Sri Bharat.

Two more police officers – former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Chandragiri Yesuratnam and Arthur – are also contesting the elections.

Yesuratnam is in the race on the YSRCP ticket from Guntur West constituency.

Arthur, who is contesting from Nandikotkur Assembly constituency, had worked as Chief Marshal in the AP Legislative Assembly.

Thota Chandrashekar, a former IAS officer, is contesting as JSP candidate from Guntur East Assembly constituency.

Similarly, TDP’s Kodumur candidate Ramanjaneyulu is another former IAS officer.

Another interesting aspect is that many former IRS officers have also thrown their hat into the ring this time.

Among them are sitting Bapatla MP Sri Ram Malyadri, who is seeking re-election on the TDP ticket, Metta Rama Rao, who opted for VRS to contest on JSP ticket from Srikakulam LS constituency, Bharat Bhushan, who is contesting from Vemuru Assembly constituency on JSP ticket, and Parthasarathy, the JSP’s Anakapalle Lok Sabha constituency candidate.

Former IRTS officer and former Minister Ravela Kishore Babu is contesting from Prattipadu Assembly constituency on JSP ticket.

In fact, civil servants joining the main political parties is not a new trend. Former IAS officer Jesudas Seelam had resigned to fight the Lok Sabha elections in 1999. He, however, lost the election. He had to wait for five years until a Rajya Sabha nomination came his way.

Former IAS officer Jayaprakash Narayan had founded the Lok Satta Party and won from the Kukatpally Assembly constituency in the combined State of Andhra Pradesh.
