The NaMo administration doesn't seem to be in a hurry to appoint the successor of Shaktikanta Das (IAS:1980:TN), the outgoing Secretary, Dept of Economic Affairs. Six days ahead of the completion of Das' extended tenure, a Gujarat cadre 1982 batch IAS officer, Tapan Ray, was on Thursday given the additional charge of the critically important post.
Since there is no dearth of competent officers following the empanelment of 1984 and 1985 batch officers as Secretary/Secretary equivalent, it was expected that the critically important post of DEA might be filled with a regular appointment. Since this hasn't happened, the indication is loud and clear that the post may remain vacant for a couple of weeks beyond 01 June 2017 - like it happened in the Ministry of Telecom.
