North Eastern Region, last week, was into limelight for PM Modi's visit and inauguration of Sikkim's Pakyong Airport ensuring improve connectivity across the region.

This week it had another such opportunity. The Inland Waterways Authority of India, a Shipping Ministry’s arm, achieved a remarkable feat by successfully conducting the ambitious demonstration of cargo movements at Ganga via Brahmaputra and Barack River System. As part of this pilot movement, two barges carrying 1,233 tonnes of bagged fly ash from Bihar reached Pandu Port in Guwahati on Monday morning covering a distance of over 2100 kms. The demonstration projects. The fly ash bags from NTPC’s plant were loaded at Kahalgaon on two 1,000-tonne barges on August 30. The vessels crossed over Bangladesh waters (via the Brahmaputra and Barak river systems) on September 11 and entered Assam on September 26.

This successful movement from Bihar to Guwahati has rekindled hope for a traditional transport system that had virtually vanished post partition (in 1947). In the new geopolitical scenario, the region was left with a costlier alertnative of transportation i.e. the surface transport.

All it demonstrated that the inland firms in Assam may use waterways as a cheaper and safer alternative for carrying any kind of raw materials and commodities.

The movement of the barges with fly ash, a raw material for cement & brick industries, has bolstered the confidence of vessel operators. These successful demonstrations have sparked hope for the region of regaining its glorious past of having the highest per capita income which it enjoyed till 50s.
