Senior diplomat Vijay Keshav Gokhale, currently Ambassador to Germany, has been appointed as new envoy to China. He would replace Ashok Kantha who was appointed Ambassador to China in January 2014 for a two-year term. Reportedly, he has personally been picked by S Jaishankar (Foreign Secretary) for the challenging task.
A 1981 batch IFS officer, Gokhale served in Indian missions in Hong Kong, Hanoi, Beijing and New York before appointed as the country’s top envoy in Germany.
In the MEA headquarters, Gokhale had held the posts of director (China and East Asia) and then Joint Secretary (East Asia) and is considered one of the most knowledgeable officials on China.
On the other hand, Gurjit Singh (IFS:1980), who served in Indonesia, would take over from Gokhle as India’s Ambassador to Germany shortly.
