Setting up of NJAC may be delayed

Supreme CourtThe central government’s plan to set up the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) is likely to be delayed as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) is reported to be reluctant to be a part of a process to frame rules and procedures for NJAC on ethical grounds.
According to the law ministry sources the CJI wants a petition challenging the NJAC be settled by the Supreme Court. The NJAC bill was passed by Parliament last year and has now been ratified by several states. The President gave his assent to the NJAC on Dec 31, thus clearing the way for its constitution.
