Sekhar Basu, who played a key role in building the reactor for India’s nuclear-powered submarine called Arihant, is the new Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). He took over the charge from Ratan Kumar Sinha who has retired. Basu will also act as Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). He was till now Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay, Mumbai. An engineer of exceptional calibre, he was earlier Chief Executive of the Nuclear Recycle Board.
Basu made a name for himself as the Project Director of the Nuclear Submarine Programme under which Arihant was built. He was responsible for developing the 80 MWt Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) which propels Arihant.
