When the appointment of new TRAI Chairman is in its final legs the power corridors are abuzz with a likely dark horse for the post. If some top sources are to be believed Harsha Vardhana Singh (Dy Director General of WTO, Geneva) is being seen as a dark horse (if any). His sudden visit to India in the first week of May was well noticed by few top authorities when he had attended the selection interview (for TRAI Chairman).
Though ‘Indianmandarins’ had anticipated in its report dated May 14, 2015 that the tie seemed between R S Sharma (IAS:1978:JH) and former Telecom Secretary M F Farooqui (Rtd IAS:1978:TN).The post of TRAI Chairman had fallen vacant after Rahul Khullar (Rtd IAS:1975:UT) had completed his tenure on May 13.
It may be recalled that the Search Committee (headed by the then Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth) had interviewed seven short-listed candidates in the first week of May namely; Ram Sevak Sharma (Secretary, Electronics & IT), Bimal Julka (I&B Secretary), Rajeev Kher (Commerce Secretary), R K Mathur (Defence Secretary), Rakesh Singh (Steel Secretary) and M F Farooqui (former Telecom Secretary).
