The continuing high prices, stemming from domestic supply constraints, of essential commodities like pulses, edible oils and onions have come to reflect huge governance deficit. Even though this is making the life of common man unbearable, there is no serious attempt to address to the phenomena triggering this deficit. In the first place, the problem has arisen because different departments are not allowed a free hand to deal with the problems of their domain. Politicians and bureaucrats put the blame for this sad affair of governance at the door of the Prime Minister secretariat, which, according to them, takes a long time deciding any issue. It is said the Modi administration is so scared of any scandal in any deal that it wants to deal with all pressing issues itself at the PM secretariat level.
