Coal Minister Piyush Goyal has said that a search-cum-selection-committee may soon be constituted for the finding the CMD for CI. So the decision of giving the additional charge of CMD of Coal India to Gopal Singh, the senior most CMD of one of CIL’s subsidiaries, was taken at the ministry itself. The post fell vacant after Suthirtha Bhattacharya superannuated on August 31, 2017, after a 27 month-long tenure as CIL CMD.
It may be underlined that the PESB had held the selection interview for CIL’s CMD on June 16 this year but failed to identify anyone. Earlier some news websites speculated that an Additional Secretary may be given the additional charge but the Ministry named Singh as interim CMD on September 01 until a regular appointment is made. Singh has still have three and a half years in hand as CCL CMD. Probably he would be the longest serving CMD of a state-owned coal company.
Having been designated the interim CMD of CIL, Gopal Singh might have got the solace that he was not victimized after the ACC declined the recommendation dated 01 July 2015 for his appointment as CMD, NMDC. After losing the NMDC contest, he also lost the opportunity to become CIL CMD in June this year.
