BJP may harvest an unexpected bonus of a Rajya Sabha seat from the split in the Congress in Uttarakhand. Party MP Tarun Vijay is scheduled to retire in July and the seat would have been won by the Congress since it had a majority in the assembly. With nine of its MLAs having switched sides, the equation has changed. Though the Speaker has disqualified the nine MLAs, they have challenged the decision in court. If the court stays the decision and orders status quo, and an election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat is held, it will in all likelihood fall in the BJP’s kitty. It remains to be seen whether Vijay, a former editor of RSS mouthpiece Panchajanya, would be renominated by the BJP.
