An unusual stand-off delays promotions of 1995-96 batch (IPS) officers in CBI

CBI, Central Bureau of Investigation

Despite 04 vacancies at Jt Director level in the rank of IG officers, CBI officers (IPS officers belonging to 1995 & 1996) are desperately waiting for their turn to be promoted in the rank of IG. Most of their batch-mates posted at the Centre in various organisations & CPEs have already been promoted in the rank of IG whereas DIG rank officers in CBI are still waiting for their legitimate dues.

A total 75 IPS officers of 1995 batch were empanelled as IG on August 14, 2015 and 72 IPS officers of 1996 batch were empanelled as IG (GoI) on January 11 this year.  While many officers of 1995 batch have been promoted to IG rank months back, five DIG rank officers currently posted in CBI are yet to be promoted to IG rank. The inordinate delay has created dissatisfaction among DIGs posted in CBI especially because at least four IG rank posts (Jt Director CBI) have been lying vacant for months.

Indianmandarins learnt that there is a stand-off between the cadre controlling authority and CBI over the same. Reportedly, GoI wants to fill many of the vacant posts of Jt Director with officers posted in cadre whereas the convention & precedents say that officers posted in CBI (as DIGs) should be promoted to IG ranks within CBI.
